Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc., was started by its two principals, Guy Hopkins Semmes and Michael Porter Denker in 1977. The company was incorporated in 1982. It has grown from a two-man organization to one which currently employs skilled craftsmen, talented architects, project coordinators, many of which have been with the company for 15 years or more.hopkins porter potomac md history 1 Hopkins & Porter provides full service custom design/build services specializing in large additions and custom homes which enhance and harmonize with existing structures and communities, and are in keeping with sound environmental practices. A full time handyman service is maintained for the benefit of new and existing clients, allowing strong support for our extended warranty. Our office staff supports the field in architectural design, sales, production, and administration.


Our founder Guy Semmes, has been a registered contractor in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia since 1975. His background in Archaeology inspired his interest in preserving and renovating old buildings. Mike Denker joined forces with Guy Semmes and together they founded Hopkins & Porter Construction in 1977. Mike Guy 12.1.15Mr. Semmes is an active member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), the Potomac Chamber of Commerce, and the Potomac Rotary. He was president of the Metropolitan Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for 2 terms, and has been as a member of the National Board of Directors of NARI. Mr. Semmes participated in the founding of the Gudelsky Institute of Technical Education at Montgomery College in Rockville, and encourages all of his employees to further their education. Presently, he handles Marketing and Planning for Hopkins & Porter. Outside of Hopkins & Porter Guy cultivates his apiary of bees.

Mike Denker graduated from Antioch College in 1970 with a BA in Fine Art. After a stint as a commercial artist in L.A. and 4 years above the Arctic Circle, working with Canadian Inuit, Mike joined forces with Guy Semmes in 1977. hopkins porter potomac md historyMike earned his National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s “Certified Remodeler” status in 1988. Mike served as president of the Montgomery County Builders Association for two years, and received their John Brawner Memorial Award: Builder of the year 2001 and 2012 the only time this award was given twice to the same person. He pursued a passion for letterpress printing and was a member of American Printing History Association. He was President of H&P until his death on May 22, 2013.
